Monday, 4/28
4/28/2006: Kevin Mench became the first right-handed hitter to slug at least one home run in seven straight games.
4/28/2017: The Yankees won a 14-11 slugfest and hit five homers in the process. This included a grand slam from Jacoby Ellsbury and a three-run walk-off homer from Matt Holliday.
4/28/2002: David Eckstein ended a 14-inning marathon vs. the Blue Jays with a walk-off grand slam for the Angels.
Tuesday, 4/29
4/29/2006: Magglio Ordóñez hit his 200th career home run as a member of the Tigers. The 3-time Silver Slugger winner hung up his spikes with 294 dingers.
4/29/2006: Albert Pujols hit his 14th home run in April, setting a new MLB record.
4/29/2013: Brandon Moss ended a 19-inning marathon that lasted more than six hours with this walk-off home run for the Athletics.
Wednesday, 4/30
4/30/1961: Willie Mays enjoyed a four-homer game, with each dinger traveling at least 400 feet.
4/30/1998: Mark McGwire cut through the fog at Wrigley Field with this home run. He’d hit a few more dingers during this season, too.
4/30/2006: Carlos Lee finished off a powerful first month of the season by hitting his 10th April home run. He finished his year with a career-high 37 dingers between the Brewers and Rangers.
Thursday, 5/1
5/1/2000: The first home run ball made its way into McCovey Cove. Guess who hit it? Barry Bonds…who else were you expecting?
5/1/1999: Chipper Jones enjoyed a two-homer day and got it done from both sides of the plate for the Braves.
5/1/2015: Alex Rodriguez tied Willie Mays for fourth on the all-time home run list after hitting no. 660. He’d finish with 696.
Friday, 5/2
5/2/2002: Mike Cameron became the 13th MLB player to slug four home runs in a game. He did it in his first four trips to the plate, too.
5/2/1998: Darryl Strawberry launched a pinch-hit grand slam for the Yankees. He’d do it again later that year, becoming the fifth player to accomplish such a feat.
5/2/2019: Noah Syndergaard piled up 10 strikeouts in a complete-game 1-0 win over the Reds. He also accounted for the only run of the game with a solo homer. This was just the seventh time it happened in MLB history and the first since 1983.
Saturday, 5/3
5/3/2006: Andre Ethier hit his first MLB home run. He’d hit another 161 during his 12-year career, all of which came with the Dodgers.
5/3/1987: Eric Davis enjoyed a three-homer performance in a Reds win over the Phillies.
5/3/1998: Mariners catcher Dan Wilson showed off his wheels by hitting the franchise’s first inside-the-park grand slam.
Sunday, 5/4
5/4/2009: Ryan Howard broke the game open for the Phillies by slugging this grand slam in St. Louis.
5/4/2006: Angels catcher Mike Napoli homered on the first pitch he saw in the big leagues. There was some interesting stuff going on in the booth, too.
5/4/2015: Mark Reynolds slugged this grand slam for the Cardinals, and he knew it was gone the second it left his bat.
Joe Carter’s North-of-the-Border Power Surge
Joe Carter made an excellent first impression upon landing with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1991. Between 1983 and 1990, his average season included a .760 OPs with 22 homers, 24 doubles, and 81 RBI.
His first three seasons with the Jays included three straight 30-homer, 100-RBI performances. An average season included a .815 OPS with 33 homers, 35 doubles, and 116 RBI.
