Mike Piazza's Favorite Month of the Year to Hit Homers Was Very Clear
Opposing pitchers always feared Piazza, but especially when the calendar flipped to one month in particular.
Mike Piazza is one of the best hitting catchers in MLB history. The Hall of Fame backstop finished with 427 total homers. He slugged 396 of them while donning the tools of ignorance, which is the most all-time.
In which month did he hit the most homers throughout his career, you ask? Just look below.
Mike Piazza Loved When the Calendar Flipped to June
Piazza hit at least 61 homers in each month of the regular season. His favorite month of all, though, was June. Here’s a quick rundown of his OPS and homer totals:
• March/April: 61 homers, .897 OPS
• May: 69 homers, .939 OPS
• June: 85 homers, .975 OPS
• July: 64 homers, .921 OPS
• August: 74 homers, .909 OPS
• Sept/Oct.: 74 homers, .888 OPS
This makes a lot of sense. June is that point in the regular-season calendar when he probably had enough at-bats under his belt to really get into a groove at the plate. And since he caught on most days, his legs weren’t overly tired — at least not like they were in August and September.
It’s just funny to see his OPS go on a roller coaster throughout the year — up between March and June, and then consistently down from July to September (although it was all excellent).
Home Runs to Enjoy From Mike Piazza
10/3/1993: The right-handed slugger capped his rookie season with a two-homer day.
9/21/1997: Piazza cleared Dodger Stadium with this mammoth blast.
9/16/1998: I still don’t know how he hit this damn pitch with so much authority.
6/30/2000: The Mets were losing 8-1 to the Braves heading into the bottom of the eighth inning. They’d eventually win 11-8 thanks to a 10-run frame, which included this three-run tater from New York’s catcher.
9/21/2001: Piazza helped NYC start the healing process after the 9/11 terrorist attacks with this go-ahead homer at Shea.
