Jose Canseco's Historic 40-40 Season Was the Ultimate Outlier
If you're going to do something out of the ordinary, it might as well be historic, right?
The founding member of the 40-homer, 40-steal club was Jose Canseco. Looking back on it all, you could see it was quite a surprise.
Jose Canseco’s 40-40 Season Essentially Came Out of Nowhere
Canseco is mostly known for hitting absolute tanks, using steroids during his playing career, and saying ridiculous things on social media. But I love the fact that he’s the founding member of MLB’s 40-40 club.
His 42-homer, 40-steal performance during a 1988 AL MVP campaign was the first time a player surpassed both benchmarks in a single season. It was also the first time he ever stole more than 20 bags in a season.
Despite playing in 17 big-league seasons, Canseco stole 20-plus bags in a year just three times (40 in ’88, 26 in ’91, and 29 in ’98).
Home Runs From Jose Canseco to Enjoy
8/24/1988: Canseco was visiting Yankee Stadium with the Athletics and hit the facing of the upper deck with this dinger.
10/7/1989: The slugger went deep for Oakland during ALCS Game 4 in Toronto. This bad boy reached the fifth (!) deck.
8/10/2000: His first home run with the Yankees came in the Bronx, and it might still be in the air.
