A Historic Hot Streak Powered Giancarlo Stanton's 2017 NL MVP Campaign
Dude came back from the All-Star break and had a second half for the ages.
Today, we give a little love to something I think about quite often — Giancarlo Stanton’s second-half rampage that secured his NL MVP Award with the Miami Marlins.
Giancarlo’s Second Half in 2017 Was Preposterous
Whenever I think about Stanton’s 59-homer barrage in 2017, I can’t help but look at how he took things to another level following the All-Star Game.
He hit 26 homers with 58 RBI in 369 plate appearances during the first half. That was followed by him hitting 33 homers with 74 RBI in just 323 plate appearances after the midsummer classic.
This was mostly powered by a ridiculous stretch from July and August. Stanton slugged 12 homers with 23 RBI in July before hitting 18 dingers with 37 RBI in August.
Those 18 homers are tied for second all-time in a single month. The only other player with 18 homers in a month is Rudy York, who did it for the Detroit Tigers in August 1937.
However, they’re both looking up at Sammy Sosa, who holds the MLB record for homers in a month thanks to his 20 taters in June 1998.
Giancarlo Stanton Tanks to Admire
6/18/2010: He made his first career homer count a little extra since it was a grand slam.
6/16/2014: I’m still trying to figure out exactly this thing found its way over the wall.
8/6/2016: Stanton blasts one of the longest homers of the Statcast era, sending this ball 504 feet.
8/9/2018: He clobbered this offering 449 feet with a jaw-dropping exit velocity of 121.7 mph.
10/25/2024: Stanton’s 17th postseason homer was also his first in the Fall Classic.
Giancarlo Stanton Blog Spotlight
Although Stanton hasn’t recorded a regular-season plate appearance yet in 2025, his 429 homers are easily the most among active players.
He’s also one of a select few players who own both the single-season and all-time home run record for the same franchise. His 59 homers in 2017 are the most ever by a Marlins slugger, and his 267 taters with the club before getting traded to the Yankees are also the most ever.
Stanton manned right field for most of 2017, which enabled him to set a single-season Marlins record for right fielders. His 132 RBI during that campaign are also the most ever in Miami franchise history.
P.S. Stanton is heavily featured in all of my books thanks to his work with the Marlins. You can buy the ebook on Gumroad (or get it for free as a paid subscriber) and the paperback book on Amazon.

Stanton is under-appreciated and yet a still-feared slugger but one who has never been able to stay on the field enough to be a bona fide HOF candidate.
18 homers for Stanton in August!?! I do not remember that at all! I was probably deep-diving into Fantasy Football prep at that point. I definitely remember Sosa's 20-HR June, that was amazing. I always thought it was 19 HR tho, so I'm glad I read this before I embarrassed myself! Great piece! I miss Mike Stanton with the Marlins!
