Barry Bonds’ Bronx Bomb & Scooter Gennett Makes History – OTD in HR History For Week of 6/2
We also have some milestone homers and more than one occurrence of back-to-back-to-back home runs.
With MLB’s regular season in full swing, my weekly home run videos have shifted from being random to looking at what happened on each specific day in home run history.
And since you’re on this email list, you get a sneak peek of what I’m sharing for the upcoming week before everyone else does. Enjoy!
Monday, 6/2
6/2/2000: Fred McGriff slugged his 400th career home run, becoming the 31st player to join the exclusive club.
6/2/2013: Garrett Jones visited the Allegheny with this shot for the Pirates. He finished the year with 15 homers and 51 RBI in 144 games.
6/2/2008: Adrian Gonzalez slugged this three-run homer to get the Padres within one of the Cubs in the ninth inning.
Tuesday, 6/3
6/3/2001: Manny Ramirez visited the fifth (!) deck at the Rogers Centre. It traveled an estimated 491 feet.
6/3/2017: Albert Pujols became the ninth member of the 600-homer club, but he became the first one to join by hitting a grand slam.
6/3/1987: Joey Meyer used the thin Colorado air to slug a 582-foot moonshot for the Denver Zephyrs in Double-A.
Wednesday, 6/4
6/4/2008: Paul Konerko had enough of a 15-inning marathon game against the Royals, so he ended things with this two-run homer.
6/4/2006: Lastings Milledge hit his first career home run off former Met, Armando Benitez. The rookie celebrated the occasion by high-fiving fans on his way out to the field.
6/4/2002: Jim Thome went deep for the 300th time in his Hall of Fame career. He’d hit a few more dingers after this one, too. Thome finished the ‘02 season with a career-high (and Cleveland record) 52 homers.
Thursday, 6/5
6/5/2001: Mike Hampton enjoyed a two-homer game against the Astros at Coors Field.
6/5/2002: Juan Gonzalez became the 34th member of MLB’s 400-homer club. He finished his career with 434 taters.
6/5/1999: Carlos Beltran went deep twice for the Royals to record the first multi-homer game of his MLB career.
Friday, 6/6
6/6/2017: Scooter Gennett became the 17th MLB player – and first in Reds history – to slug four home runs in a game.
6/6/1994: Mike Piazza went to the deepest part of the park in Miami for his first career grand slam, and still made the dimensions look small. His bat flip game was also on point.
6/6/1990: Cecil Fielder enjoyed a three-homer game for the Tigers. He’d finish his year with a league-leading 51 homers and 132 RBI.
Saturday, 6/7
6/7/2023: Elly De La Cruz announced his arrival in the big leagues with a bang by slugging a 458-foot tank for his first career homer.
6/7/2007: The Mets went back-to-back-to-back when Carlos Delgado, David Wright, and Paul Lo Duca all went deep against the Phillies.
6/7/1997: Larry Walker, Andres Galarraga, and Dante Bichette got the Rockies off to a fast start in the first inning by hitting back-to-back-to-back jacks.
Sunday, 6/8
6/8/2002: Barry Bonds hit just one home run in his career at Yankee Stadium. He made it count by launching a ball that might still be in orbit somewhere.
6/8/2021: Shohei Ohtani absolutely pummeled this poor baseball, sending it 470 feet.
6/8/2002: Shawn Green visited Eutaw Street at Camden Yards with this game-tying homer against the Orioles.
P.S. Have you checked out my books? They’re available as ebooks and paperback books. Father’s Day isn’t too far away — it would make a gift gift for the baseball-loving dad in your life!
