Adam Dunn's Unique Distinction in the 40-Homer Club
Why pass the 40-homer mark when you can hit exactly that number...for four straight years?!
Adam Dunn was one of the best when it comes to hitting 40 homers in a season — especially in consecutive campaigns. There’s an interesting wrinkle to his streak, though.
Is 40 Adam Dunn’s Favorite Number?
Adam Dunn did three things very well as a big leaguer: draw walks, rack up strikeouts, and hit majestic home runs at a consistent rate.
He hit 40-plus dingers in six different seasons, and five of them came consecutively from 2004-08. It’s even better because he hit exactly 40 dingers for four straight years:
⁃ 2004: 46 homers
⁃ 2005: 40 homers
⁃ 2006: 40 homers
⁃ 2007: 40 homers
⁃ 2008: 40 homers
He nearly kept it going in 2009 and 2010 with the Washington Nationals, hitting 38 homers in each campaign. Soooo close to being even cooler than it already is.
Big Donkey Home Runs to Enjoy
8/10/2004: As he typically did, Dunn hit a tape-measure shot to center field for the Reds while playing the Dodgers.
10/1/2004: Dunn hit his 46th and final home run of the season. That was the most he ever hit in one year.
6/30/2006: Down three runs in the ninth, Dunn sent Cincy home happy by slugging this walk-off grand slam.
9/24/2012: After missing the 40-homer club for a few seasons, Dunn returned in 2012 with the White Sox. Here is him hitting no. 40 and 41.
Adam Dunn Blog Spotlight
Remember how I mentioned Dunn was one of the best at hitting 40 homers in a season? Well, his six seasons of hitting at least 40 are among the most all-time. Dunn’s streak of five straight years with 40-plus taters is also among the most all-time. Not bad clubs to be in!
Dunn’s 2004 campaign still ranks as the fifth-best home run season ever in Reds history. He slugged 270 dingers while in Cincy, which also ranks fifth on the club’s career homer leaderboard.
And, just for good measure, the left-handed slugger’s 38 homers in 2010 is the most by a Nationals first baseman in a single season.
P.S. Dunn is heavily featured in all of my books, mostly thanks to what he did in Cincy, but also with the White Sox. You can buy any of my ebooks on Gumroad (or get it for free as a paid subscriber) and any of my paperback books on Amazon.
